1. Students focused on areas of light and dark on the figure, not on details.
2. Line was used to emphasise different aspects of the figure.
3. Students then focused in detail on one part of the figure (e.g. arm, knee).
4. If they had time, students considered the background and began to incorporate figures as a prelude to compositional studies.
