Mechanical Faces.

William de Ferrers School.

Key Stage 3. Year 8
July 2006.

Continuing with the theme of portraits (first
explored in the Green Man, soap carvings,
and clay gargoyles) students looked at the
work of Arcimboldo, an artist who replaced
the normal structure of the human face with
fruits, fish, books and flowers.

Students worked in pairs, planning ideas
for mechanical faces.

They brought recyclable materials from home
and had to think carefully about which objects
would be appropriate for their designs.

Students began by making a papier mâché
base. The recyclable materials were stuck on
to this, filling every space with an object of
some kind.

The finished piece was sprayed with metallic paint.

In a related sketchbook homework, students
had to create a mechanical design using
geometric shapes (with reference to futurism
and constructionism).
