May 2011.

Following filming for BBC Bitesize, Stuart Semple
invited students and staff from William de Ferrers School
to visit his South London studio.

The GCSE students were Timothy Adeyeloja, Matthew
Chester, Bethany Chipperfield and Ashby Moss-Robins.

The staff were Julia Stubbs, Wendy Walker and
Emma Nicholas.

The students spent an afternoon jointly creating
a painting using the methods, tools and materials
that Stuart uses in his own work.

They began by listening to popular music and making
drawings and cuttings from fashion magazines.

A canvas background was created with household paints.
This was blow-dryed. The students chose images which
were made into a composite on a computer and
printed on acetate. This was projected onto the canvas
and was sketched on aided by paper.

The students painted the image and a photo was taken
of it. This was used on a computer to work out
where to place and size a chosen word. This was cut
as a stencil on a machine, stuck to the painting and
air bubbles blow-dryed and wiped out, to stop bleeding of
paint and hence get a crisp outline. Newspaper protected
the painting whilst paint was sprayed over the stencil.
This was peeled off and finishing touches of spray paint
applied.
